oh so duh!

So having attended my church last night (we are starting a 6 week experiment about having church on Saturday night), I cruised early to the beach. Got to Poipu, parked and started putting on my gear.  That's when it hit me that I had forgotten to bring my cameras!!! They are staged near the door, near the beach towels.  But today, I had already gotten a beach towel, so didn't even think to look in the appropriate area.  I actually thought about driving back home to get them, but decided it wouldn't kill me to swim once in a while without photographic proof.  So of course this was the day when I saw 3 octopuses.  OH OF COURSE I DID.   

With 3 octopuses, of course I enjoyed the swim anyway.  And the two seals sleeping on the beach probably enjoyed NOT having their pix taken.  So today you will be treated to some special octopuses, since I can't post without pix!

 This is an octo-plate my brother-in-law gave me years ago. Cute, eh?!

This is from a comic called Rabids.  If you haven't seen it, look for it. French, but no dialogue, so the language won't be a problem. Very funny show.  AND the octopus on his head shoots off when you push a button on his back. Adorable.

Harmony Kingdom octopuses.  They have some amazing animal sculptures.  This one's top comes off and there's a little bag of ink inside. Some people are very creative. 

So though I have no proof of the octo-sightings, I did have a nice swim. And it was actually kind of freeing not to have to carry the camera.  But it'll probably be a while before I forget again!

One octopus! woohoo!!!

It has been kind of you not to mention it, but I haven't seen octopus in a while...until today! yay! OK, look away, Barbara and Perry! I was celebrating seeing my first octopus for a while...

In this one, you can see the siphon and eye...very cool. The eye has lines radiating out from it.

 Look closely at this monk seal: it's moulting! Theories abound as to why they drag themselves further from the water when moulting.  In this case, nestled right up next to what I think is Naupaka plant on the beach.

Seal #2 sleeping peacefully on the island.  the water was jamming, but I'm glad to say that they had taken down the Beach Closed sign, so I was able to go in the deep end.

Miscellaneous moon

Well, there are no octopuses in this post. But there is an almost full moon.  I always have a hard time photographing the moon...it rarely behaves and it's far away. But sometimes if you concentrate on the areas near the moon, like the trees, it is interesting. 

We saw the moon on our walk.

I had to return later with the camera. Oddly, carrying a camera, even though it's little, detracts from our exercise!

Or maybe it's not the camera, but the photographer, who stops too often to snap a photo. There's just no stopping me!

Ah, the kiddie pond again..

I could easily be wrong, but experience has shown that more octopuses are spotted in the big pond than the kiddie pond.  So guess what that means...yeah, 3 days of no octo-sightings. sigh.
I did see some cool animals. Here they are for your viewing pleasure:

 There were seals snoozing on the beach. I was early, too, so no one was pestering them. And they were roped off for protection.

 A teensy-tiny humu. gotta love that.

I found the same Drupe shell from yesterday in the same spot on top of a rock. So I brought it home. So far, no one is living in there. Thank God!

 Four Moorish idols. It's unusual to find them close enough together to get 'em in one frame.

Ze devil fish! This one only did the bright orange and yellow for a second and yours truly wasn't ready for it.

Well, you know what these are.

You know what these are too, but Monk Seals just sounds so fun to say.  And they were snoozing. An activity not at all unusual....people often assume they are dead because they are so still and you usually can't see them breathing. Just nappin', folks!

Needlefish. They swim near the surface just to make my life difficult.

 Some kind of blenny...and below a rainbow blenny.  Not the real name, but I caught the photo while the light of a rainbow was on it.

 Crab inside a shell. I knew it would be there, so I picked it up. One often finds them inside of shells that look tired...which this one definitely did. Electric Blue Crab.

Three Cowry shells.  the 3rd was hiding to the left of the others.

 Christmas Wrasse. For me! I love 'em with the sun on those colors.

 Eel, saddle wrasse and a mystery above and to the right...couldn't tell what the yellow-ish blob was and didn't notice it until i got the pix home...

 Another Snowflake Moray eel. These eels are all over the bottom and that's just another in the long list of why not to walk on the bottom. (Scorpion fish being the main reason. That and broken glass. Oh yeah, and potentially walking on an octopus den! But I digress..)
