Those pesky octopuses!

Today, I was skunked: no octo-viewings!!! The nerve!
Especially surprising after yesterday's bonanza of 5 octopuses. Ah well. No frogfish either. Perhaps they are off together at a conference. ha.

But I did see lots of turtles. One even swam by me.

Hard to see, but it was a big one. I didn't want to follow it, so that's the best photo.
But the ones on the beach (5) were easier to catch with my camera:

 When I thought about it, the turtle is actually a pretty cool design: hard protective shell and all. But sometimes us humans think everything is for us: I couldn't kill one for its shell or its meat. And certainly not in Hawaii, where that's illegal.

Again, people were being respectful. Always nice!

 A small Horn shell, adhered to the rocks. I was going for some more pix, but I think it was occupied by a hermit crab, as it moved a bit, then fell to the bottom.

 Somebody had a lobster meal. (Not me: I always see them when someone has already eaten it.)

 A tiny Humu was concerned that I would pose a threat. ME?!

 This is the trash I picked up today. The inevitable scrunchy, a surprising plastic cup and the fishing line and lead. My friend won't be getting the lead: I threw it in the trash.

 Wana. Don't walk on the bottom! I told a man today that the animals on the bottom don't like walkers: he replied that his wife was floating out to sea. Not sure what one thing had to do with the other. Hubby said I should have explained about a new sport called swimming. HA.

 The surfers were far out, but happy. This is why I didn't go very far out on the deep side today.

So no octopus, but plenty of God's pretty creatures. Thanks, God! 

What a day!

When I got back from seeing the 5 octopuses, I had to do paperwork and send it. Then I had to pick up a friend from the airport...an hour early! Just now, I can finally breathe again.

The first octopus was well hidden...look in the hole below the red rocks. The octopus has its legs around its head. Not easy to see, but definitely there.

 #2 was sitting next to its rock and above its den.

You can see #4's body (same color as the sand) and its eye, peeking at me from its den.

This was a surprise octopus. First time seeing it.

 Wouldn't you think that white rock would fall into the den on top of #5?

And I quickly looked, but couldn't find the frogfish. I do hope no one snagged it to sell. 

I did pick up 2 pieces of lead weights, and the attached fishing line. And a horrible hook. This was from the deeper side, so no pix, as i wanted to get rid of that hook asap. Call me crazy.

Two small rock mover wrasse in the shallower side. They looked like twins.

 Can you see the small 3 Spot Chromis near the coral at the bottom? It was guarding.

I can't tell if the earring I found was a real diamond. It looks really sparkly in person! Perhaps I'll get it tested.

I laughed into my mask when I saw this urchin: it looked as if it had a crown on its head. ha.

OK, having now fulfilled my daily fun, I will sign off and think about dinner. Aloha!

A little rain felt good

After the heat of the past few days, a little rain felt good this morning. And since it was early, I was able to get in and snoop around. Well, not in the deeper side, because not only were the waves pretty big, it was also high tide. That's why it's nice to have two swim spots to choose from. So I went into the Keiki side. And found 4 octopuses!

As I'm typing this, I still can't  believe I was able to spot the first one. I actually thought it was a pile of seaweed:

 See what I mean? Can you spot the octopus between those 2 rocks? It's exactly the same color as the surrounding rocks.

 In this one, you can see part of the siphon.

 It didn't move. It didn't change color. I could barely see it breathing!

 And this is from the other side. It's on top of a rock, now.

 Really, what great camouflage!

I saw 3 more octopuses. Following is #2. Just below the red rock. You can see the white lines that radiate out from its eye.

And #3: The eye is visible. This one had turned brown. And slinked down into its den.

They are wily!

I was happy to see #4, as it is a "regular", so I know where to look for it. Glad the spearfisherman didn't find any of these octopuses! I wasn't able to spot the frogfish, though. Perhaps it got blown about by the recent big waves. I will keep looking, of course.

I'm always struck by the juvenile Yellow Tail Coris. So different from the adult.

And people were being respectful of the snoozing seals. The one on the left felt the need to scoot its nose in the sand. It later sneezed the sand out. Wish I had caught that on video!
